Last Friday was the Cub Scout Blue and Gold Banquet where, among other things, prizes were handed out for the recent Pinewood Derby races. 

Orville, with craftsman from Uncle Bill, entered a delightful car. I made the mistake of telling him that it would probably win most original. Well, when we got to the races, it was the most original there — by leaps and bounds — but no such category of prize was mentioned. Orville came in second out of the three cars in his den. (His car ran the fastest down hill, but it did not compete as well on the flat section.)

At the award’s ceremony, prizes were handed out for First, Second, and Third in each den, plus, everyone who participated got a little prize. Orville was bored and wanted to go home. I thought his attitude would change when he got his Second Place prize, but it did not. I think he was not impressed with a price that everyone got.

Then…they announced that there were three special prices: The price for Most Awesome Pinewood Derby car in the Pack went to…Orville E. Wright!

Orville’ s whole demeanor changed! He knew he deserved this prize! He was ecstatic! Our only disappointment was that Uncle Bill, who had attended the Banquet, had needed to leave early and was not there to share the moment.
