Star Trek

I was quite dubious of the STAR TREK trailer. Frankly, it looked awful, as if the movie would not be in the spirit of STAR TREK at all. But, underneath, I was vaguely hopeful because I recalled that ever trailer for the show ANGEL I ever saw made the upcoming show look bad, but they were often really good.

Then, I heard the premise: that within the storyline itself, this version was an alternate time line. Suddenly, all my objections disappeared, for I thought: Well, whatever they do with these guys, they’ve got to be more like the originals than the evil bearded versions from the Mirror Mirror universe.

But I was still nervous. STAR TREK had been my favorite show as a kid. I LOVED Spock. I talked about Spock, played Spock, and wanted to dress like Spock. This desire was impeded by my mom’s old fashion belief that a young girl should never wear black pants. (Black pants were apparently racy.) It was hard to be Spock without black pants, but I could still wear a blue sweat shirt and I cut my bangs like Spock’s. Our favorite game, which we played for years, was Young Enterprise: the Enterprise crew as kids. I was Spock. My cousin Ariel was Kirk. My brother Law was Sulu, who we, for some reason, called Shrimp. Oh, and I also had a bit of a crush on Checkov.

So, with some trepidation we went to see the movie.

It was awesome.

It was made of awesome and ate awesome ice cream for dinner.

This movie was the best STAR TREK since old STAR TREK! (And I really like some of the later STAR TREK.) The guy playing Spock was Spock and they got the real McCoy, seriously…not just a pun. What’s more, there’s even a scene when the guys were On The Bounce. So it was super good STAR TREK and better Starship Troopers than STARSHIP TROOPERS.

 Did I mention awesome?

I loved it.

  1. It was indeed made of awesome.

My first fan letter as a preschooler was to Spock, written in green crayon. I think I asked him to marry me. I’m fairly certain my parents didn’t actually mail it, though.

  2. I saw one ad for the movie, and I echoed your trepidation. the ad I saw was terrible, looked like every other comic book movie ad I’d seen the past several years, and not at all Star Trek.

I’m glad I went to see it anyway. =)

    • Quite a few friends praised it and one had seen it twice. Even so, I wasn’t that excited when I went. But, BOY was it good!

As one friend said: it wasn’t just a good STAR TREK movie. It was a good movie.

Wonder if they could get these same actors to do a new TV show.

  5. I’m so glad to know that a Spock fan liked Spock too! Because you see . . . I never liked Spock when I was younger. I have experienced a complete change of heart because of this movie, and I’m sure if I went back and watched the original series I would love him now. (I am a lot different myself now, too, so I think it’s just a matter of experiencing Star Trek afresh and going, “Hey, he’s really awesome after all . . .”) But I did wonder if long-time Spock fans would like him in the new movie. :)

Chekov was adorable! I really love Walter Koenig (mostly as Bester in Babylon 5) so I was worried I wouldn’t be able to stand the new Chekov, but he was great! :D

  7. We went for our anniversary

I liked it, too. I liked all the characterizations and character interactions. McCoy and Scotty in particular made me smile. I like this Chekov even better. As far as McCoy, did you recognize that he is the same actor who played Eomer?

Only downer for me, as a mom, were the adult elements that would never have found their way onto the small screen, or at least not as graphically. Otherwise, I’d give it 100 percent.

  10. I doubt it. I think the best case scenario is that we get a *good* sequel.

I hope its NOT a remake of WOK. I’d rather have new stories rather than remakes of old ones.

  11. Ice Cream!

That line is awesome. You should be a writer.

And marry me. You should be a writer and marry me. More.

  13. On the Bounce!

Yes! That’s exactly what I thought as the guys were pitched down through the atmosphere, or pulling swords out of their whatevers. Boo-ya Johnny Rico.

I felt bad about laughing at the red shirt space suit, though.

You do realize that your girlish crush on Chekov makes you one of the earliest slash fic, okay LARP-ers don’t you. Though Spock/Chekov is a pretty unusual variant… :-)
